Dog Training Collars have become more popular and for good reason. They help to make short work of annoying dog problems like excessive barking or obedience issues in general. There are two camps of opinion on the use of these collars.  Some mistakenly believe these to be inhumane and crule devices, others see these as a valuable tool for obiedence training. The collars we looked at are not designed to hurt the dog in any way and we would never endorse a product that did. These collars que the dog to respond to commands, prevent the dog from wandering off, check aggressive behavior, barking and more.

These can be one of the more expensive dog training items a dog owner may invest in so we decided to have a look at several of them and offer descriptions as well as our opinions. We looked at units in the mid price range intended for the home and yard.  There are more expensive units designed for the Sport or Hunting dog which are not covered here.

The leading manufacturers of e-collars are; Sport DOG, Tritronics, DT Systems, Dogtra, E-Collar Technologies, and PetSafe.  We looked at one product from each manufacturer.

Dogtra IQ Remote Trainer 

The Dogtra IQ Remote Trainer is one of the smallest, yet more powerful e-collars on the market. It is in the median price range for these devices at $159.99.  It features a reduced receiver/collar designed for smaller dogs and precise stimulation levels of 0-100) with a  range of 400-yards.  Is supports nick, constant, and non-stimulating vibration modes. a quick charge will last 2 hours with the included Lithium Polymer batteries. You can use NiMH batteries but these will require a 10-hour charge.  The collar and receiver are fully waterproof and the trasmitter is water-resistant. The casing is antimicrobial and the transmitter is ergonomic and doesn't have an external antenna for your dog's comfort. It's asy to use and the receiver has a magnetic on/off switch. It includes a blue LCD screen to display stimulation levels and a 3-bar battery life LED indicator. This yard training collar is small, yet powerful, intended for small dogs as little as ten pounds.

Yard Trainer 105S

The Yard Trainer 105S is from SportDog and is designed especially for tougher or stubborn dogs. It is the perfect choice for basic obedience training around the house or yard. The YardTrainer has a 100 yard range making it easy for you to train anywhere in your yard. The waterproof receiver/water resistant transmitter features 8 levels of stimulation with a tone button and includes a low battery detect feature. Kit Includes: Remote transmitter, collar receiver, batteries, long contact points, test light, lanyard basic training instruction with pro trainer Charlie Jurney and operating guide. SportDOG Stubborn Dog YardTrainer has a stronger correction in the collar for stubborn dogs.

We found this unit worked very well with our Golden who would bolt through an open door completely oblivious to traffic. Low level stimulation got the point across on a couple of ocasions.  Now, only the tone is needed when she becomes a danger to herself.

How it Works

It's in the mid-price range for e-collars and has many desired features.

Educator E-Collar Dog Trainer

The Educator E-Collar Dog Trainer from E-Collar Technologies sells for $199.99.  It includes the smallest receiver on a dog collar and will fit any dog with a neck size of 8 - 24 inches.  This is a one dog system with a medium range of 3/4 mile for greater control of dogs 5 lbs and larger. Unique COS (control of stimulation) technology provides 100 dial adjustable levels of very clean stimulation including "Blunt" and "Pavlovian". Utilizes Ni-MH rechargeable batteries and is waterproof and shock resistant.

Educator collars use proprietary stimulation that's "blunt", not "sharp" like a traditional shock collar.
